What is LocalTalks?

We believe community fuels commerce.

LocalTalks (@localtalksyow) is a monthly networking event for entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators and/or creatives of any type.

LocalTalks organizes discussion panels centered around the struggles, highs and lows, and expertise of local entrepreneurs. Each panel is made up of a host and 3-4 local entrepreneurs. We also feature an array of local businesses who set up booths at our events. The events are held on the last Tuesday of every month from Sept-May.

My Role: My primary role for LocalTalks is securing sponsorships, but I have two secondary (equally important) roles as the event manager, and I help in recruiting diverse panelists.

My Responsibilities: My responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Securing a food and drink sponsor for every event

  2. Ensuring there is at least one diverse speaker on the panel

  3. Maintaining the rhythm and flow of the atmosphere by connecting with attendees, facilitating the Q&A, and drawing up the event floor plan

Main skills learned: Partnerships, Project management, Community Building, and speaker/volunteer engagement.

How did I get here?

I used to be a regular attendee of LocalTalks back when it was under different management. Then when I discovered that the current organizer was passing on the role. I jumped on the opportunity. I applied to be the main host/lead of LocalTalks, unfortunately, I did not get it, but I did end up as director of Sponsorship’s.

Why did I do it?

I needed job experience in a field I've never worked for: Partnerships. Or call it sales, no matter. I know I am a people person, and I needed job experience in front of people. I knew my networking and negotiating skills are something I need for my future career, the best way to get it is through volunteering. As well, I was already a regular attendee of LocalTalks and loved the event so much. I am personally invested in growing the event and making sure it is the biggest success.

What was my impact?

Sponsorship’s: Since our September launch, I've managed to secure one season long drinks sponsor (Tease Tea) as well as 3 food and drink sponsors for every event. Not only did I manage to do this with 0 budget. But each event, I’ve been able to highlight a new local restaurant each time, and also increase foot traffic for one elgin restaurant.

Panelists: I also sought out 3 panelists to speak on our panels specifically because of their diverse backgrounds. I wanted immigrant or panelists of colour on the stage. I believe their unique perspective and expertise contributed greatly to the atmosphere/credibility of the event.

Event Management: I used my two years of hospitality experience to design a floor plan that optimized space, flow of attendees, vendor placement, and food & drink placement. My ability to work a room has also contributed to the overall experience of attendees as they felt more comfortable at the event.
